What's Playing for "Silver and Gold" our 19th Season?

From Amy Eggleston, our Music Director

(musical selections are subject to change)

Join us for our shimmering concert season of Silver and Gold!

Our season opens September 12 and 14 with “Sounds of Silver and Gold” featuring a wide variety of wonderful works with silver or gold in the title, including the jazz-infused Golden Age Suite  by Shostakovich; the sparkling overture from Le timbre d’argent (The Sound of Silver) by Saint-Saëns, the triumphant Entry of the Gods to Valhalla from Das Rheingold by Wagner and the elegant Gold and Silver Waltz by Lehar.

In our second concert weekend on October 24 and 26, is our concert of “Gold Medal Winners”. We proudly present our concerto competition winner, Dylan Hanes, performing Grieg’s heroic Piano Concerto in A minor. Another special feature will be the U.S. premiere of a piece by a celebrated Chinese composer who happens to be the father of one of our chorus members!  Shout to the Mountains was composed in honor of thousands of dedicated workers who sacrificed their lives to build the largest power station in China in the 20th century in the steep mountains west of China. This a cappella chorus won the gold medal in the China Chorus Competition.

For our ever-popular Christmas Concert, December 12 and 14, we’ll “Deck the Halls with Silver and Gold”. Of course we’ll include a special arrangement of the Burl Ives’ Silver and Gold, as well as Silver Bells from “The Lemon Drop Kid”.  We’ll also include some inspirational gems like Lux Aurumque (Light and Gold) by Eric Whitacre, warm and luxurious as pure gold! We guarantee to surprise you with  the holiday gems that will glitter and gleam all evening long!

In our February 13 and 15 concert, we celebrate “Music of the Silver Screen”. You’ll hear some of John Williams’ most famous hits from movies like Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark. We'll play a celebrated arrangement of Morricone’s Gabriel’s Oboe  from The Mission. You’ll also discover how many fabulous classical pieces you’ve learned through movies, like the iconic opening of Also Sprach Zarathustra by Strauss from 2001: A Space Odyssey. You’ll be humming along with all these silver screen musical wonders!

Our April 24 and 26 concert, we head on a golden adventure with “The Golden Record”. We'll explore the music of “The Golden Record”, the recording sent out to space on the Voyager spacecraft to share the sounds of earth with our extraterrestrial friends!  This concert will be out of this world, featuring spectacular pieces like the Brandenburg Concerto No 2 by Bach and The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky. Hear the golden sounds of the pieces that celebrate our most sparkling examples of musical creativity!
